Let’s add some sparkle to your weekend by exploring a gem from the Swedish royal collection, Princess Sofia’s Palmette Tiara. It first graced the public eye back in June 2015 at Sofia Hellqvist’s wedding to Prince Carl Philip of Sweden. This elegant piece was a heartfelt wedding gift from Sofia’s new in-laws, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

The tiara is delicately crafted with tiny diamond palmettes arranged on a slim, diamond-encrusted base, enhanced with striking diamond spikes. Initially, Sofia showcased the tiara with vibrant emerald accents. There’s a bit of intrigue here too—the emeralds were repurposed from one of Queen Silvia’s own necklaces, a present from a Thai prince, which was secretly transformed into the tiara in Thailand to keep it a surprise for the wedding.

Although we don’t have any snapshots of Silvia wearing the original necklace, Sofia didn’t wait long to wear the tiara again. She wore it at the Nobel Prize ceremony and banquet in December 2015, pairing it with contemporary diamond and emerald earrings.

Fast forward to November 2017, and Sofia unveiled a fresh look for the tiara, opting to wear it without the emerald enhancements and introducing a new, halo-shaped base.

The transformations didn’t stop there. In December 2017, she introduced a pearl setting during the Nobel celebrations, and in 2019, she dazzled everyone with turquoise accents. In December 2022, Sofia sported blue briolette-cut gemstones. During the King’s Golden Jubilee banquet at the Royal Palace in Stockholm in September 2023 Sofia debuted yet another type of toppers. This time honey-colored citrines.

And just recently, in April 2024, she debuted London Blue Topazes at a state banquet in Stockholm.

To sum it up these are the different styles Sofia’s wedding tiara can take. Which is your favorite? Mine is without a doubt the Diamond pearls. They are soft and feminin and compliment Sofias darker features in my opinion.

  • Emerald toppers
  • No toppers at all
  • Diamond pearls
  • Blue Turquoises
  • Light Blue Topazes
  • Honey Colored Citrines
  • Dark Blue Topazes

It’s wonderful to see such a versatile tiara, especially one that’s a newer addition to the royal collection and not one of the ancient Bernadotte family heirlooms. I wonder what more toppers Sofia could potentially be saving for future events. Perhaps Amethysts, Opals or Rubies….
